The Next…

Put yourself in my shoes for a minute:

You are a Mormon who writes young adult fiction. When you tell others this, it is only a matter of time (often only a couple seconds) before they ask the inevitable question:

So you’re going to be the next Stephenie Meyer?

Um, no. As much fun as it would be to be part of the Mormon Mafia, I am not going to be the next Stephenie Meyer. Just no. (Nothing personal – I enjoy Meyer’s writing and admire what she has done, but no.)

I am not going to be the next Stephenie Meyer, the next Orson Scott Card, the next Aprilynne Pike, the next JK Rowling (had to have at least one non-Mormon on this list), or the next anybody. I do not want to be the next anybody.

I will just be the only me, thank you very much.

Stephenie Meyer, Ally Condie, Aprilynne Pike - thanks YA Highway for the great picture!

I love how your tough statement was signed with curlicues and stars. It’s even scarier.

Hehe. Good point. It kinda takes the edge off a little, doesn’t it?

No, it’s seriously scarier. I always look at fear from a psychological standpoint. Lots of things can rip the guts out of stuff. Now, how many things can be cute, even adorable, then smile as they disembowel you? That is absolutely terrifying. Hence, the curlicues are perfect.

Yay, my Photoshopping skills have finally been used for good instead of evil! ROFL. Thanks for the YA Highway shout out!
